Road accidents happen all too often, for various reasons, and we all know how devastating the consequences can be. Pembroke Pines saw a particularly tragic accident on January 27, when a man fixing his car by the side of the Sawgrass Expressway was fatally struck by a passing truck. 63-year-old Peter Phillip Rampie died at the scene of the collision, near the northbound entrance ramp from Oakland Park Boulevard, shortly after 7am on a Saturday morning.
Fatal Accident on the Sawgrass Expressway
Early in the morning of Saturday, January 27, Peter Phillip Rampie pulled onto the shoulder to fix a problem with the Chevy Cruze he was driving. As the car appears to have broken down, it remained partially in one of the lanes of the northbound expressway, where it was hit by a Dodge pickup truck as its driver attempted to enter the road. The pickup truck crashed into the Chevy Cruze from behind and, according to reports from Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. D.A Sims, caused the car to roll onto the driver as he attempted to fix it. In what perhaps adds to the tragedy of the incident, the car was a rental, which was only being used while the driver’s own car was being repaired. Mr. Rampie was pronounced dead at the scene.
